HVAC Drain Pans

Furnace pans are essential to your air heating and cooling system, generally called condensate drain pans, HVAC drain pans, or AC drain pans. They catch the water generated from your air conditioner to ensure it doesn’t leak into other parts of the house.

Why Replace A Cracked Condensate Drain Pan

Many homeowners have found that when their pans aren’t working, the water damages parts of the house, like ceilings and floors. Water damage can be frustrating, so you should replace the pan if it ever gets loose.

Moreover, while you can seal tiny cracks, we do not advise such a solution. More minor cracks can accumulate, and sealant can’t fix rusty or broken condensate drain pans.

AC, Furnace And HVAC Drain Pan Options

Carrier Condensate Drain Pan

The 28MC500384 Vertical Condensate Pan is another option if you don’t have a horizontal drain pan. Fortunately, either of these Carrier options should mesh well into any number of current installations, so there shouldn’t be too much work needed to get them to slide into your air conditioner. Keep the orientation of your existing drain pan in mind, even if damaged. The direction in which it fits into the equipment is necessary to ensure proper fitment.

Nordyne Condensate Drain Pan

Other brands that we carry include York and Nordyne. The Nordyne 669941 Vertical Drain Pan is one example we can recommend. You might need this if you already have a drain pan designed to Nordyne’s specifications since anything else would be too long. While a shorter pan might fit into the catch area, you wouldn’t want to use something like this for long since some water from your AC unit would be allowed to splash otherwise.

Fortunately, it would help if you didn’t have difficulty finding the pan you need here. Start by familiarizing yourself with the way these devices work. They’re straightforward from a mechanical standpoint, so you won’t have to memorize much-advanced HVAC theory before shopping for a new one.

How Does A Condensate Drain Pan Work With Air Conditioning?

Air conditioning involves the system absorbing the warm air from the local area’s atmosphere, removing the heat and moisture, and releasing it to cool the house, room, or building. The filter and evaporator coils help remove both by becoming very cold and circulating the air through the refrigerant. This process is called `heat transfer. It’s a natural part of the AC operation process. Only drip or drain pans can mitigate the transfer.

Water droplets form when the temperature is sufficiently lowered after it’s separated from the air. They appear on the evaporator coil before dripping off the glass during the heat transfer. The pan then collects all the droplets, so they don’t leak into the walls. Any water droplets that condense at some physical point above the pan will eventually fall into it due to weight.

The pan is connected to a condensate drain line. This is a series of piping that connects to the sewage system outside the house.

When the air conditioning is not in use, the drain line transports the water outside the house so that it doesn’t gather. This process is done via gravity without much pressure. If you were to watch the process, there’s a good chance that it would much more closely resemble a slow drip than an actual deluge of water.

Why A Clogged Condensate Line Is A Problem

If the water is left, it can become prone to mold or bacteria. The contaminants are hazardous to the people inside the house.

Transporting water makes everyone safer. Other than this, though, AC drain pans are essentially passive and have little in the way of moving parts. Assuming that they don’t corrode, they won’t often need to be replaced or changed.

Clean the pans in many models, especially those that collect a fair amount of water all at once.
